HIPAA Compliance

HIPAA rules are set forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, outlined in the Privacy Rule, and contain particular guidelines about information exchanged between healthcare providers. Dental labs and dentists are licensed to share patient records and treatment procedures because they are categorized as “Health Care Providers.” Moreover, the Dental Association asserts that the Privacy Rule does not necessitate a Business Associate Agreement between the dental laboratory and the dental practice. The dental office does not share “Protected Health Information” with the laboratory (i.e., Social Security numbers, phone numbers, birth dates, medical records); any information linking the patient to their name on the work authorization or their family members. The only purpose of the shared data is to identify the materials sent to the laboratory.

One solution for protecting patient privacy in the dentist’s office is to use codes or a combination of numbers instead of names. Encrypted emails can also be utilized for electronic information communication.
